Google Apps (GApps) is the Google’s proprietary application set (a package of Android programs) and you can find these core Google apps in almost all Android devices. Gooogle Apps comes built-in with most OEM’s Android smartphones and tablets but these apps can’t be integrated in custom ROM packages because it breaks the licensing restrictions, thus Gapps are not integrated with the CyanogenMod installation. So you’ll need to flash and install Gapps whenever you install a new custom ROM or you won’t be able to use them on your phone.
Actually, CyanogenMod doesn’t require Google Apps package to work but you’ll need it for better Android experience after the installation of CyanogenMod custom ROM. You can also download and install/update Google Apps from Google Play Store. These apps are always running in Android under the process of com.google.process.gapps! to use Google Maps, Calendar, Google Plus, Google Voice Search, Google Talk, Google Search, Google Music, Google Sync, Car Home, Gmail, Google Backup Transport, YouTube and Google Docs.
You can easily find the appropriate Google Apps package for your Android device from the given list. Download and install these apps with any custom ROM but the list is categorized according to CyanogenMod ROM versions. As you know that all custom ROMs are based on AOSP, so you’ll need to flash them separately.
