The unofficial version of AOKP custom firmware is now available for the Sony’s Xperia Z devices. This latest custom ROM is based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow that brings amazing features and enhancements. There is no news from the company that when the latest Android OS firmware will be released for these devices but if you wish to taste the latest Android OS now then you can easily flash this ROM on your device. Keep in mind that this ROM is currently in its testing phase so you might face some bugs or not functioning features.
All you need to have the latest custom recovery already installed in your Xperia Z which is required to flash the Android 6.0.1 AOKP Marshmallow custom firmware and Google Apps. Please note that this is not an official firmware which is developed by the third-party developers, not officially released by Sony. You can install Android 6.0.1 AOKP Marshmallow custom firmware using the tutorial below on Xperia Z.
This tutorial is only for installing Android 6.0.1 AOKP ROM on Sony Xperia Z. Please do not try on any other Xperia Z variants.

Before Getting Started:
- Take a complete backup of all your data and setting on your phone like contacts, call logs, SMS, MMS, internet settings, installed apps, photos and audio/videos files etc.
- Turn OFF the Antivirus and other security features from your computer to avoid unexpected issues while downloading the firmware and installation.
- Download and install Xperia Z drivers on your PC.
- The bootloader of your Xperia Z should be unlocked. How To?
- The battery level of your Xperia Z should be at least about 70% before proceeding to the installation guide.
- The latest version of a custom recovery should be pre-installed on Xperia Z Compact.
Steps To Flash Android 6.0.1 AOKP Marshmallow on Sony Xperia Z:
Here we have given the step-by-step guide to update Xperia Z to Android 6.0.1 AOKP Marshmallow custom firmware. Follow the given instructions carefully.
Step No 1:– First, download Android 6.0.1 AOKP ROM and Google Apps for Xperia Z on the desktop of your computer from the above given links.
Step No 2:– Plug your device with the PC and mount your Xperia Z USB memory using the USB cable.
Step No 3:– Transer the downloaded Android 6.0.1 ROM zip file and Google Apps zip files to the root folder of SD card.
Step No 4:– Power OFF your device and disconnect from the USB cable in order to boot into Recovery Mode.
Step No 5:– Power ON the phone by pressing and holding Volume Up + Home + Power keys at the same time.
Step No 6:– While you are in ClockworkMod Recovery, choose perform a full data wipe by selecting “wipe data/factory reset” as shown below. You can use the Power key to select any option.
Step No 7:– Next, perform a cache wipe by selecting “wipe cache partition”.
Step No 8:– Also perform a wipe of your dalvik cache to get rid of boot loops or any other errors.
Note: From CWM recovery, go to ‘advanced’ and then select “wipe dalvik cache”.
Step No 9:– Go back to the recovery main screen and select “install zip from SD card”. Then choose “choose zip from sdcard”. Locate the Android 6.0.1 ROM zip file which you have already transferred to your SD card by using volume keys. Select the firmware .zip file using the Power button and confirm the installation on the next screen to begin.
Step No 10:– Repeat the above step to install Google Apps .zip file too.
Step No 11:– Once the installation is successfully completed, go to “+++++Go Back+++++” and reboot your device by selecting “reboot system now” from the recovery menu.
Your Xperia Z will boot now and it might take about 4-5 minutes to boot for the first time.
Done! You have updated Xperia Z to Android 6.0.1 AOKP Marshmallow custom ROM successfully.
