How To Root AT&T Galaxy S4 SGH-I337 on Android 4.4.4 KitKat Firmware

So if you have AT&T Galaxy S4 SGH-I337 Smartphone and want to root it then here is a good news for you that Samsung released a minor update I337UCUFNJ4 firmware upgrade for Samsung Galaxy S4 (AT&T) to brings the Android 4.4.4 KitKat. This update includes minor enhancements, Knox 2.0, security updates and some new preloaded applications.

Thanks to the XDA Developer muniz_ri for providing the root procedure on the new firmware. So if you are ready for the KitKat 4.4.4 update on Samsung Galaxy S4 (AT&T) then here is a step by step guide that how to root AT&T Galaxy S4 on I337UCUFNJ4 firmware.

Warning:

Before Getting Started:

  • Check twice your device’s model, this tutorial is only applicable for the Samsung Galaxy S4 AT&T, Model number SGH-I337. Do not try it on the other model.
  • Take a proper backup of your Galaxy S4 such as SMS, MMS, Contacts and Media Storage etc.
  • Enable USB Debugging by navigating to Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging
  • Download & Install Samsung Galaxy S4 Drivers
  • Make sure that your device’s battery is charged at least about 80% to avoid shut downs.

Downloads Required Files:

  1. Download SuperSU
  2. Download Odin v3.10.0
  3. Download Towel Root APK
  4. Download I337_NC1_Stock_Kernel
  5. Download I337_NJ4_Stock_Kernel

Steps To Root Galaxy S4 SGH-I337 AT&T on I337UCUFNJ4 Firmware

Step No 1:- First of all, get the I337UCUFNJ4 Firmware update on your Samsung Galaxy S4 manually or via OTA.

Step No 2:- Extract the Odin Flashing Tool on the desktop of your PC that you have already downloaded from the above link.

Step No 3:- Now run Odin Tool as an Administrator on your PC.

Step No 4:- Put your AT&T Galaxy 4 into the Download Mode, to do this Turn Off your Galaxy S4 first and then press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down keys altogether.

Step No 5:- While your Galaxy S4 is in Download Mode, plug it to the PC through USB cable. Once your device properly connected to the PC, the ID:COM section will turn yellow / blue.

Step No 6:- Now click on “AP” / “PDA” tab in the Odin and locate the firmware I337_NC1_Stock_Kernel file.

Step No 7:- Click on “Start” button to start the flashing process to update your device. Your device will be rebooted, once the firmware is updated.

Step No 8:- Your device is now updated with the I337_NC1_Stock_Kernel firmwares. Next, star the rooting process of your Galaxy S4.

Step No 9:- Copy the TowelRoot App into the internal/external memory of your device. Now reboot the device and run Towelroot app on it.

Step No 10:- Launch the towel root app on your Samsung Galaxy S4 and press the button Make it Rain” to root your device.

Step No 11:- It will root your phone now its the time to flash the I337_NJ4_Stock_Kernel via Odin flashing tool to get back to the stock NJ4 kernel.

Step No 12:- Finally, again reboot the Galaxy S4 and download the SuperSU app from the above link, SuperSu App enables you to manage root permissions on your device.

Note: Extreme lag may appear on your device making it unable to install Towel root after flashing the NJ4 firmware. Just give a reboot to your Galaxy S4 AT&T once and try again. Now everything will be set.

    upon reboot my phone now says “custom” with a lock symbol. Is there any way to get around it doing that?

    trying to flash the first file odin reported fail and went into emergency firmware recovery screen i do not recommend using this method, wait until more methods are available

    OMG! You guys @ XDA rock… My 1st attempt at rooting a phone (galaxy s4 i337) was too easy. I was nervous after reading a lot of the comments but decided to try it. I know everything does not always go as planned but if you follow XDA’s instructions carefully. You will have a rooted a phone in minutes. Thanka so much to xda devs!

    Ok what work for me finally was using this version of Odin http://www.mediafire.com/download/9e036z7vk8qmkbh/Odin_v3.10.0.zip the installing the I337_NC1_Stock_Kernel then Towelroot Got Root Message installed superUser and check with
    Root Checker which verified root…. But then i was not able to connect to wifi anymorey had no mobile network carrier message either..Long story short i installed I337_NJ4_Stock_Kernel on the phone same steps like the first installation but this time you install the NJ4 firmware my phone booted i still had Root and i could connect to wifi…. I dont know if this will be of any help to anyone but thats what finally work on my phone

    Took my time read and reread directions and it worked perfect. Only thing I had trouble was getting phone back into download mode to flash NJ4 kernel other then that everything went smooth
