Root Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop & Install PhilZ Touch Recovery

Note:

This guide containing Philz Touch Recovery is only working with the Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 only. Do not apply this guide on any other or incorrect variant, as a result the device might gets bricked. You can verify the device model from Settings > About device > Model number.

Before Getting Started:

  • Fist thing is first, we highly recommend you to take a proper backup of all your existing data on your Galaxy S4 before proceeding to the rooting instructions using a recommended custom recovery like CWM or TWRP. In case anything goes wrong then you’ll be able to restore it.
  • Download and install the correct USB Drivers for your Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 on the PC.
  • Enable USB Debugging Mode on the device by navigating to Settings > Developer Options.
  • Make sure that the Galaxy S4 has at least about 70% of charge to prevent unexpected shutdowns during the rooting process.

Steps to Root Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop & Install PhilZ Touch Recovery using ODIN:

Step No 1:-  First, download the PhilZ Recovery (philz_touch_6.12.8-i9500.tar.md5) and Odin flashing tool on the desktop of your PC.

Step No 2:- Now plug the phone with PC using its USB data cable.

Step No 3:- Turn OFF the Galaxy S4 in order to boot it into Download Mode, turn the device ON and then press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power keys at the same time for a few seconds until the phone enters into Download Mode.

Step No 4:- Run Odin tool on the PC (as Administrator).

Step No 5:- In Odin, click on the AP button and choose the .tar.md5 recovery file that you’ve already saved on your PC.

Step No 6:- Initiate the flashing process by clicking on the Start button in Odin.

Step No 7:- Your Galaxy S4 will be automatically rebooted, once the installation is completed.

Step No 8:- Navigate to recovery by holding Volume Up + Home + Power buttons simultaneously after the Galaxy S4 boots up.

Step No 9:- Go to Philz settings > Re-Root SystemYes Apply SuperSU

Step No 10:- Finally, download SuperSU from the Google Play Store by following the given link.

Step No 11:- Launch SuperSU app, Select NORMAL when prompted that how do you want to update binary.

Done! Reboot after installing SuperSU. You’ve successfully rooted the Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 running Android 5.0.1 firmware and have installed PhilZ touch recovery on it.

    Hi followed all steps as given above till step no 8 but I dont get philz settings as per step no 9. It gives me the menu of android instead with option to wipe and clear cache, etc. Help with rooting plz.

    well … dont reboot to the system after flashing Philz ..
    untick the auto rebbot and flash philz..
    after odin said pass … unplug and pull out battery
    go to recovery mode directly

    same here… SuperSU app install failed and asked to retry after reboot… On reboot, stuck at “samsung” logo…

    Does your galaxy s4 crashed on SAMSUNG Logo? Did you tried to root it and then it crashed? Do you wanna unroot you galaxy s4? Here copy paste this link and your galaxy s4 will be fixed!
