Update HTC Desire HD to Android 5.0 Lollipop via CyanogenMod 12 Alpha Custom ROM

The first ever Android 5.0 Lollipop update has been rolled out for HTC Desire HD via CyanogenMod 12 Alpha build by the CyanogenMod (CM) team, thanks to a CM12 Preview ROM by the XDA Developers’ senior member, Mustaavalkosta. This CyanogenMod 12 (CM12) Alpha Custom ROM is now available to download for HTC Desire HD to taste the latest Google’s update. CyanogenMod ROMs are traditionally based on AOSP that comes with those latest Android features that are usually not available on the stock versions, such as reliability over stock Android ROMs released by OEM vendors and enhanced performance.

As its name indicate that this is an alpha custom firmware, so there may be chances to have some bugs and many things might broken but Lollipop fans can give this ROM a try. Here we’ve given a guide to update HTC Desire HD to Android 5.0 CM12 Preview Lollipop custom firmware. This is actually not an official software update release but just a custom ROM that needs a custom recovery like ClockworkMod to flash the ROM and Google Apps .zip files on your HTC Desire HD. So if you are interested to update your HTC Desire HD then follow this step by step guide on how to install Android 5.0 Lollipop on HTC Desire HD via CyanogenMod 12 Alpha build custom ROM.

Note:

This HTC software update is unofficial and is a custom third-party ROM. This guide is limited to HTC Desire HD only. Don’t try it on any other model. You can check your device model by going to Settings > About Phone.

Before Getting Started:

  • Take a complete back of all your data like Apps, SMS, Contacts, APN Settings, Call Logs and Media Files etc before proceeding to the installation guide.
  • Enable USB Debugging on your device by navigating to Settings > Developer Options.
  • Download and install USB Drivers for your HTC Desire HD from this link
  • Your device’s Bootloader should be unlocked. Go to HTCDev.com
  • Make sure that your phone is rooted and factory unlocked.
  • ClockworkMod or TWRP recovery should be installed on your device.
  • Your device must have at least 80% of battery charge before proceeding to the installation guide.

Steps to Install Android 5.0 Lollipop on HTC Desire HD via CM 12 Custom ROM

Step No 1:- First extract the downloaded Android 5.0 CM12 Alpha Build for your HTC Desire HD on the desktop of your PC to get a boot.img.

Step No 2:- Plug your Desire HD with a PC and mount its USB Memory using USB data cable.

Step No 3:- Transfer the Android 5.0 ROM and Google Apps .zip files to the root folder of the SD card on your device.

Step No 4:- Now move the boot.img file to android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools directory on the PC.

Step No 5:- Turn Off your phone in order to boot it into Bootloader/Fastboot Mode.

Step No 6:– Now Turn On your HTC Desire HD by pressing and holding the Volume Down + Power buttons together.

Step No 7:- While you are now in the Fastboot mode, go to android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools directory on the PC and run Command Prompt.

You can launch the command prompt (Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt).

Step No 8:- Type and hit enter the following given command:

fastboot flash boot boot.img

Step No 9:- Now give this command:

fastboot reboot

Step No 10:- After giving the above commands, just follow the on-screen instructions and select BOOTLOADER and then boot into Recovery mode.

Step No 11:- In ClockworkMod Recovery, choose wipe data/factory reset to perform a full data wipe.

You can use the Power button to select any option in the Recovery Mode.

Step No 12: Perform a cache wipe by selecting wipe cache partition.

Step No 13:- Now go to advanced section and then select wipe dalvik cache.

Performing a wipe dalvik cache to avoid errors during ROM installation or unwanted boot loops .

Step No 14:- Go back to the main recovery menu and choose install zip from SD card.

Step No 15:- Now select choose zip from sdcard.

Find the Android 5.0 ROM zip file that you have already transferred the SD card of your phone. Just select it and confirm the ROM installation on next screen to start.

Step No 16:- Finally, install the Google Apps (Gapps) by repeating the previous step on your device.

Step No 17:- Hit Go Back and reboot the phone by selecting reboot system now from the recovery menu after installing Gapps.

Your HTC Desire HD will be rebooted now. It may take about 4 to 5 minutes for the first boot to complete. So be patient.

    Will it work properly I mean if there is any problem in the ROM files. I’ve tried Android L ROM from everywhere but it gives some sort of error while flashing!
